Cornelius Green: A Trailblazer in Ohio State Football History
Cornelius Green, a former standout quarterback at Ohio State University, holds a special place in college football history. Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Green grew up in a modest household, where his natural athletic ability and determination set him apart from a young age. Despite the challenges of his upbringing, Green excelled in academics and athletics at Dunbar High School, earning recognition as a dynamic athlete with potential in multiple sports.
Green’s path to Ohio State University was shaped by a combination of opportunity and ambition. He initially intended to pursue basketball, but his exceptional talent on the gridiron caught the attention of college scouts. When legendary Ohio State head coach Woody Hayes came calling, Green saw the chance to join a powerhouse program with a rich tradition of success. While it wasn’t an easy decision to leave home, Green embraced the challenge and chose Ohio State, recognizing it as a platform to achieve greatness.
When Green arrived in Columbus in the early 1970s, the role of the quarterback at Ohio State was traditionally reserved for white players, reflecting a broader pattern in college football at the time. However, Green’s talent and determination could not be denied. In 1973, he earned the starting quarterback role, becoming the first Black quarterback in Ohio State football history. This milestone was not only a personal triumph but also a significant step forward for racial integration in collegiate sports.
Under the tutelage of Coach Woody Hayes, Green flourished. Known for his leadership, athleticism, and poise, he guided the Buckeyes to three consecutive Big Ten titles and Rose Bowl appearances during his tenure. Green’s ability to manage the game and execute Hayes’ disciplined, run-heavy offense earned him numerous accolades. In 1975, Green received the Chicago Tribune Silver Football Award, given to the Big Ten’s Most Valuable Player. That same year, he was named a team captain, a testament to the respect he garnered from teammates and coaches alike.
Green was selected in the 11th round of the 1976 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. He also had brief stints with the Seattle Seahawks, the BC Lions, the Columbus Stingers, and the Columbus Metros. However, he transitioned out of professional football and redirected his focus to making an impact off the field.
Today, Cornelius Green continues to inspire and lead the next generation. He serves as a mentor and teacher at St. Albans School in his hometown of Washington, D.C. As a coach and educator, Green imparts the lessons of discipline, resilience, and perseverance that defined his own journey. His work at St. Albans reflects his commitment to shaping young minds and ensuring that his legacy extends beyond the football field.
In 1998, Cornelius Green was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame. Finally, the ultimate award was in 2019 when Cornelius Green was honored by being inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame. Out of the many thousands of football players that have played in “The Granddaddy of Them All”, Cornelius Green is 1 of 117 players to have this honor bestowed upon him.
Cornelius Green’s story is one of breaking barriers and achieving excellence against the odds. From his groundbreaking role at Ohio State to his enduring influence as a mentor, Green’s impact remains profound, reminding us of the power of determination and the significance of opportunity.
