Cornelius Green: Pioneering Quarterback and Mentor
Cornelius Green, a trailblazer in the world of college football, carved a path of historic accomplishments during his time at Ohio State University. Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Green grew up in a working-class neighborhood where he quickly distinguished himself through his athleticism and tenacity. As a star athlete at Dunbar High School, he initially envisioned a career in basketball, but his natural ability as a quarterback drew the attention of college recruiters, including the legendary Woody Hayes.
When Green committed to Ohio State, he faced significant challenges. Ohio State’s football program had never had a Black starting quarterback, but Green’s undeniable talent and strong work ethic propelled him to break through this barrier. In 1973, he made history as the first Black quarterback for the Buckeyes, becoming a symbol of progress during a time of social and cultural transformation in America.
Under Hayes’ leadership, Green excelled as the Buckeyes’ field general, earning recognition for his poise under pressure and his ability to lead the team to victory. During his tenure, Ohio State secured three Big Ten championships and earned trips to the Rose Bowl each year. In 1975, his senior season, Green was named the Big Ten Most Valuable Player, an honor that reflected both his personal achievements and his contributions to the team’s success.
After college, Green was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the 11th round of the 1976 NFL Draft. While his time in the NFL was short-lived, he transitioned seamlessly into a career dedicated to mentoring and educating young people.
Today, Green works at St. Albans School in Washington, D.C., where he serves as a teacher, coach, and role model. His impact extends far beyond the classroom and the football field, as he inspires students to pursue their passions and overcome obstacles just as he did throughout his own life.
