“Archie Griffin….Greatness Revealed”
Archie Griffin, an icon in college football, stands alone as the only player to win the Heisman Trophy twice. His journey from a modest upbringing on the eastside of Columbus, Ohio, to becoming one of the greatest players in the history of the sport is a story of hard work, humility, and dedication.
Griffin was born on August 21, 1954, in Columbus, Ohio. Growing up in a working-class neighborhood, he was the second of seven children. His father, James Griffin, worked long hours to provide for the family, instilling in Archie the values of perseverance and resilience. From a young age, Griffin demonstrated a natural talent for football, playing on local teams and quickly becoming a standout player.
During his time at Eastmoor High School, Griffin’s football career began to blossom. He led his team to the city championship and rushed for 1,787 yards and 29 touchdowns in his senior year, earning him All-Ohio honors. His impressive performances attracted the attention of numerous college recruiters, but Griffin chose to stay close to home and attend The Ohio State University.
At Ohio State, Griffin’s career reached unprecedented heights. Under the tutelage of the legendary coach Woody Hayes, Griffin became a key component of the Buckeyes’ powerhouse offense. Coach Hayes, known for his strict discipline and passion for the game, was the perfect mentor for Griffin. Their relationship was built on mutual respect and a shared commitment to excellence, with Hayes pushing Griffin to reach his full potential.
Griffin made an immediate impact at Ohio State, setting a school record by rushing for 239 yards in his second game as a freshman. His junior season saw him rush for 1,620 yards, earning him his first Heisman Trophy in 1974. Griffin’s senior year was spectacular, as he rushed for 1,357 yards and won the Heisman Trophy again in 1975. His back-to-back Heisman wins are a testament to his consistency, skill, and the respect he garnered from peers and sportswriters alike.
Griffin’s college career was nothing short of extraordinary. He finished with 5,589 rushing yards, a record that stood at Ohio State for decades. His ability to perform under pressure and his sportsmanship made him a beloved figure not only in Ohio but across the nation.
After graduating, Griffin was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the first round of the 1976 NFL Draft. He played for the Bengals for seven seasons, but his professional career was overshadowed by his legendary college achievements.
Following his football career, Griffin returned to Ohio State, where he became deeply involved in the university’s community. In 2004, he was named President and CEO of the Ohio State Alumni Association, a position he held until 2015. In this role, Griffin worked to strengthen the university’s ties with its alumni, promoting engagement and fostering a sense of pride among Buckeyes worldwide.
Archie Griffin’s life and career are a testament to the power of hard work, determination, and humility. His journey from the eastside of Columbus to the pinnacle of college football and beyond has inspired countless young athletes. As the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner, Griffin’s legacy at Ohio State and in the broader world of sports is secure, embodying the very best of what it means to be a student-athlete.
